What's Your Default Kind of Kindness?

What's Your Default Kind of Kindness?
Be Kind

I just read a short post about helpfulness as an amplifier. It was written by Josh Spector, a very generous content strategist that I'm a fan of.

According to Josh, it pays to be helpful.

I agree 100% (and I bet you do as well!)

However, it's important to be mindful of the kind of kindness we're offering to the world. Let me explain what I mean by that.

In the book Give and Take, Adam Grant tells us about two giving styles:

  1. "Selfless" giving (the one to avoid because it leads you to burnout and other negative consequences)
  2. "Otherish" giving (the one to practice as it helps you to feel competent, capable, successful, and the list goes on)

Why is that?

In a nutshell, selfless givers attend to the need of others but not attend their own needs.

In contrast, otherish givers attend to the need of others and their own need.

How I stay otherish

Here are 2 strategies and 1 coaching question I use all the time.

Credit: I've learned this a while ago, from the Course “A Life of Happiness and Fulfillment” by Dr. Rajagopal Raghunathan ⤵️

💡
Strategy 1: contain the cost of giving

- Am I the right person?
- Help multiple people at the same time
💡
Strategy 2: exercise value extended strategy

- Allow yourself to feel gratitude, pride, etc.
- Say "no" at times
💡
Coaching question: did I do my best to practice kindness and generosity in “otherish” vs. “selfless” ways?

Thanks for reading and stay helpful!
